Differentiated Products , International Trade and Simple

چکیده
Using a simple general equilibrium model with two countries and two sectors including one manufacturing sector producing (vertically) differentiated products, we first show that an international barrier to trade in the manufacturing sector creates inter-industry trade, whereas an international barrier to trade in the other sector generates intra-industry trade among vertically differentiated products. We generalize the model to arbitrary (but feasible) symmetric levels of barriers to trade in both sectors and investigates its implications for trade liberalization. In particular, the empirically observed increase in intra-industry trade in vertically differentiated products is shown to be consistent with general equilibrium effects associated with deeper trade liberalization in the manufacturing sector than in the nonmanufacturing sector. Commodity Classification and Network Hypothesis in International Trade
Rauch (JIE, Vol.48, 1999) proposes the hypothesis that proximity and common language / colonial ties are more important for differentiated products than for homogeneous products in forming price information and matching international buyers and sellers. His gravity-model analysis, however, is not able to show strong evidence to support this hypothesis. In this paper, by using SITC and monopolis...
متن کاملDeterminants of international tourism: a three-dimensional panel data analysis
International tourism is a fast growing industry generating half a trillion dollars in annual revenues and accounting for almost 10% of total international trade, and almost half of total trade in services. Yet, it has so far failed to receive the attention it deserves from mainstream economics. This paper attempts to provide an initial understanding of the determinants of international tourism...
متن کاملThe Importance of Being Different: Product Differentiation and the Duration of Trade
This paper studies how product differentiation affects the dynamics of US import trade. Using nonparametric and semiparametric techniques we find that trade in homogenous and reference priced products is of much shorter duration than trade in differentiated products. Differentiated products have a median survival time of five years; reference priced goods and homogenous products have a median s...

So far, there have been three major technological advances. The first industrial revolution in Britain began and hydraulic and steam machines were introduced to factories. The Second Industrial Revolution differentiated between components and assembly of products based on the division of labor. This led people to the era of cost-effective products and mass production. The Third Industrial Revol...
